âYouâre getting around like a pro.â Maura smiled as she watched Elise crutch her way into the spacious family room.
âItâs working with the physio Dr Callahan recommended. And the strapping on my ribs. The physio agreed with Ethan on that issue and sourced some strong and stretchy elastic bandage for me.â Elise settled into one of the cane conservatory chairs. âZoe Callahan is hopeful I can soon change this plaster for a lighter walking cast.â
âThat wonât be so tiring for you.â Maura glanced at her watch. âWho knew strapping your ribs would make such a difference.â
âMaybe Ethanâs experience of being stomped by a bull has worked to my advantage.â
Startled, Maura glanced at Elise. âWhen did that happen?â
âI donât know when, he just happened to mention it when he was strapping my ribs.â
âIt must have been when he was in Venezuela.â The older woman sighed. âWe lost contact with him for years. Eventually, he made contact with Ish.â
âHe said he missed his cousin.â
âI gathered as much.â Maura gave her a thoughtful look. âYouâre more comfortable with Ethan now?â
Elise shrugged, unsure how to answer.
Comfortable?
The man flat-out fascinated her. She lived for those moments when Ethan revealed a flash of his sardonic humour. And those times she managed to make him laugh were pure gold.
âWeâve decided to let the past lie until my memory returns.â Elise huffed out an impatient breath. âI, for one, canât wait.â
Mauraâs smile was sympathetic. âYouâve had no glimpses even.â
âA few random glimpses, but nothing that makes any real sense.â
The mystery Ethan had uncovered together with Charleneâs insinuations were more than a little troubling.
âYouâre not worrying about Charlene are you?â
âYou donât think Ethanâs father revealed more to his wife than he did his son?â
Maura considered this, and frowned. âMaybe. But I suspect that painting is the key.â
Elise jolted, stung by the reminder. âHow the dickens did I, a stranger, come to have a Galloway family painting? Frankly, the whole situation scares me.â
But am I a stranger?
No stranger would have the Galloway birthmark, but what is the connection?
She darted a glance at Maura. Had Ethan told his aunt about their matching birthmarks? The older womanâs serene expression didnât change. âDonât worry so.â
Elise regarded Ethanâs aunt. Would the return of her memory betray the older womanâs kindness? Desperate to change the subject, she asked, âWhere was Ethan a cowboy?â
âIn Venezuela.â
âWhy there?â
âBecause it was as far away from here as he could go.â Maura made an impatient gesture with a work-worn hand. âHeâs said very little about his time there. Heâs revealed more to you than anyone.â
The dry words sent heat crawling up Eliseâs cheeks.
Seeing her discomfort, Maura said, âIâll leave you to rest.â
